Haw River cleanups scheduled

I'm coordinating three cleanup trips in February and March on the Haw River. This is a great opportunity to support one of the most popular rivers in the Triangle.

The trips are being done in conjunction with the Haw River Assembly's annual cleanup in March.

So far, Carolina Canoe Club members have collected 29 bags of trash for this effort. Unfortunately, there is still plenty of trash  on the river.

We have three trips this year to better accommodate club members' schedules. Don't worry, there will be no cleanup trips the weekend of the Shamrock Smackdown.

Feb. 20: Upper Haw

We'll focus on Sawtooth Island, which captures a lot of trash. On a previous cleanup trip, we were able to fill three canoes with trash in a very short period of time.

We'll meet at 10 a.m. at the US 15-501 access and run shuttle to the put-in at Chicken Bridge.

Bring an open canoe if you have one. I will provide gloves and trash bags.

This is an N+ trip. Be sure to wear cold weather gear, bring lunch, water, etc. just as you would for a regular paddling trip.

Contact me at rjbrueckner@mindspring.com if you have questions.

Feb. 27: Upper Haw near Bynum Dam

The focus of this trip will be the islands upstream of the Bynum Dam. Strainers between the islands capture huge quantities of trash. We'll also send a crew to the party island where people leave full six packs of beer.

We'll meet at 10 a.m. at the US 15-501 access and put in upstream of the dam.

Bring an open canoe if you have one. I will provide gloves and trash bags.

This is an N+ trip. Be sure to wear cold weather gear, bring lunch, water, etc. just as you would for a regular paddling trip.

March 19: Middle Haw

The focus of this trip will be the islands downstream of Bynum Dam. These can sometimes capture huge quantitties of trash.

We'll meet at 10 a.m. at the US 64 access area and put in downstream of the dam at the US 15-501 access.

If we have enough volunteers, we may divide into smaller groups that target shorter sections of this section.

Bring an open canoe if you have one. I will provide gloves and trash bags.

This is an N+ trip. Be sure to wear cold weather gear, bring lunch, water, etc. just as you would for a regular paddling trip.
