Cleanups for 2019
Tuckaseee: Our annual Tuckasegee River/Fontana Lake will be held 8 a.m. to noon on July 1 during Week of Rivers. Bring water to stay hydrated.
Tom Womble is working with local groups in the Bryson City area to provide bags and to haul trash away, which means we can put more boaters in the water. The club will provide gloves and trash grabbers.
Mayo River: The club collected 14 bags of trash and two tires at the Mighty Mayo River Trip 2019 in less than ideal weather. Participants included: Eliot Mintzer, Randy DiCello, Doug Stager, Tom Womble, Zak Queen, Matt Daniels, Lisa Birskovich, Cyndy Falgout and Bob Brueckner.
Haw River: The CCC fielded three teams March 16 for the annual Haw River cleanup. Here are the rsults:
- Upper Haw team: 8 paddlers, 8 bags of trash, sealed can of paint, golf ball, 10 gallon barrel
- Middle Haw team: 8 paddlers, 13 bags of trash, gigantic Igloo cooler, batter cooking pot, 3 tires, 3 balls, the lard bucket
- Middle Haw pre-cleanup: 9 bags of trash, 1 kayak paddle blade, part of a tire
- Lower Haw team: 8 paddlers, 22 bags of trash, 4 tires, fire extinguisher, cooler, seat, tackle box and tackle
- Grand total: 52 bags of trash
Haw River: CCC paddlers Paul Joffrion, Alton Chewning, Kurt McKissick and Bob Brueckner cleared brush from the Bynum Beach access on the Middle Haw on Saturday, April 27.
The brush was left after trees and shrubs were cut along utilities lines that cross the site. More than half of the debris was collected before the paddlers filled a trailer and pickup truck.
Club members were assisted by Bill Bussey, a Chatham County park technician.
The public access is downstream right of the Bynum pedestrian bridge.
