Discord and the CCC

This discussion is likely not what you expect!

Discord is a chat tool used to communicate with communities and friends, usable from a web page or app. A while back the Foothills Paddling Club switched their main social media platform to Discord. Intrigued, I spoke with those who set that up. Using the FPC as a model, I’ve created a CCC Discord site.

Discord is also, well, not Facebook. Facebook is a terrible communication platform: it hides or reorders content; you can’t readily separate content or access; poor moderation tools — all things Discord does much better. Discord divides discussions into “channels”, where users can mute (and even hide) channels to manage unwanted notifications (examples: a commercial channel that you can mute; a Eastern NC Trips channel, which you can mute when you live in SC [aka the “Garrick channel”]). Moderators can move content to the appropriate channel.  Traffic is lightweight, so works well when connectivity is poor.

The topic of “members only” surfaces every so often, but is effectively impossible on Facebook. The CCC Discord server is integrated with CCC membership–automatically. Only members can access the discussion channels. Much like the email list and Facebook, web site announcements also go to Discord.

I don’t intend/expect Discord to be a replacement for Facebook. Instead, it’s an additional method of communication exclusively for our members. I am hopeful we can use Discord as an additional way to communicate more effectively and build a stronger CCC community. Will that work? One way to find out!
