We had planned to kayak the Upper Green and canoe the Lower Green on Sunday Jan 17, but on Saturday it didn’t look like there was going to be a release so we did a back up plan of French …
On Labor Day we had 8 people and 7 boats on our French Broad section 9 trip. It was a low water run around 1200 cfs and a good level for a pfd.
On Memorial Day we did a trip down the New river in Virginia from the Bridle Creek Bridge(near the Mouth of Wilson) to the Hwy 21/221 bridge. This was an 8'ish mile paddle that was mostly class 2 with a couple of 2+ish rapids thrown in. We had a group of 5 – Keith Raker, Theresa Raker, Joandra Proia, Lim Lenburg and Judy Milakovich. It was a perfect day of paddling with beautiful weather, sufficient water flow with a nice picnic thrown in for good measure.
On Sunday May 13th we had a group of 6 on the French Broad. 5 people joined me for a trip from Bardhard down to Stackhouse. The trip went well. There we two people that joined me hand paddlng Frank and Koz. It's a rare thing to have 3 hand paddlers on one trip. Also on the trip was Greg and Donna as well as Elliot. It was a nice day on the river.
We had some rains the week before the trip so the flows in the high country area were good. We decided to run the class I-II section of the Watauga River. I had been wanted to run this section of river for several years and never had any luck catching it at a good level. We had 8 on the trip. We had 3 tandum canoes – Keith and Theresa Raker, Chris Campbell and Taylor, John and Jamie. Melinda was in an OC1 and Diane was in a Kayak. The level was a fluffy 650 cfs. The 8 of us ended up running about 4 miles upstream of 321.
We Swam!
Over the winter I outfitted my 16' Old Town Canoe Penobscot with a spray deck. This is in an effort to get my wife out white water paddling with me more and also to take on less water in the canoe.
I decided that the Nanty would be the best trip to test out the spray deck since last time we paddled the canoe on the Nanty it swamped several times. I posted the trip and had one paddler express interest in joining, and then he was a no show.
