BOARD POSITIONS:
Positions are listed with the Bylaws definition of the job and then a description of what the job entails.
PRESIDENT
Bylaws: The President shall preside at all meetings of the CLUB and of the Board of Directors at which he/she may be present, and shall coordinate the work of the officers and committees of the CLUB in order that the purposes of the CLUB may be promoted.
Description: The President assures the adherence of the Board and Membership in the conducting of Club business in regards to Bylaws and Corporate responsibilities. This task is fulfilled with the cooperation and encouragement of the Board, Staff and Members. The President leads the Club in maintaining our defined purpose and serves as an arbiter in reconciling Club positions on contended issues. When situations arise, leads Board email discussions and determines when an in-person or virtual Board meeting is needed. Provides leadership, enthusiasm and cohesion in the Club by exploring new ideas and programs with officers and circulating among members as often as possible.
CRUISE CHAIR
The Cruise Chair shall perform the duties of the President in the absence or inability of the officer to act; shall plan and develop the formal schedule of cruises including the selection of volunteer trip coordinators and WOR volunteers for same; and shall maintain the calendar of scheduled trips and events.
-The Cruise Chair serves as the Vice President of the Club, acting as a surrogate if the President is not available. The Cruise Chair coordinates and promotes regular trips and events and works in conjunction with the WOR Coordinator and WOR Clinics Coordinator to plan the WOR schedule and activities.
SECRETARY-TREASURER
The Secretary-Treasurer shall record the minutes of all meetings of the CLUB and of the Board of Directors; route correspondence received by the CLUB to the appropriate CLUB officers; shall keep a full and accurate account of the receipts and expenditures; and shall make disbursements in accordance with the approved budget, as authorized by the Board of Directors. The Secretary-Treasurer shall present a financial statement at every meeting of the CLUB and at other times when requested by the Board of Directors and shall make a full report for the maintenance of such book of account and records in conformance with the requirements of the Bylaws.
-The Secretary-Treasurer is responsible for the club funds and financial transactions including balancing the bank statements monthly with Quicken, making deposits physically at the bank, paying bills that arise including mailing out member trip incentives and officer reimbursements as requested, keeping good records of such transactions and translating this information into the Excel budget sheet. With funds exceeding $30,000, it can be a sizable job.
EDUCATION CHAIR
The Education Chair shall plan and develop activities of an educational nature, which promote development, and improvement of paddling skills for CLUB members. He/she may acquire and distribute educational materials (such as pamphlets, films, slides, videos) to achieve the goals of this office. The Education Chair shall select instructors and/or safety boaters in accordance with ACA guidelines.
-The role of the Education Chair is to continue the Club’s legacy and ethic of paddling excellence by cultivating continual development in learning and teaching various whitewater disciplines. This is done primarily through clinics. The EC needs to be able to enlist students, match them with instructors and organize and monitor the clinics, within the requirements of the American Canoe Association, which establishes the standards for whitewater education. ACA certification is valuable, but not a requirement for the Education Chair. Balancing the incentives and continuing the pipeline for development of ACA certified instructors, marketing the clinics, managing the registration process and working within a budget are some of the skills that will be developed.
MEMBER-AT-LARGE
The Member-at-Large shall serve as a liaison between the Membership and the Board, serving as a conduit for suggestions, complaints, and concerns; and keeping the sources anonymous when possible. The preference is for the Member-at-Large to be someone not residing in North Carolina.
