CCC Email List Migrated from Yahoo Groups to Groups.io
The CCC Yahoo Group has existed since Dec. 1999 with 1258 users on the YahooGroups CCCList mailing list.
However, Yahoo Groups is winding down. While email should keep working, as of Oct. 28th 2019 Yahoo Groups will no longer be able to add files (note: a feature we weren’t using). As of early December, all non-email content will be removed.
In 2009 Yahoo suddenly shut down Geocities, taking roughly 7 million websites with it. I would rather move to another service prior to any last-minute scramble when they decide they’re shutting down the service completely. Impacts from any move will, generally, be low, if only because there’s very little traffic on the list (~10 messages/ month, a significant drop from its peak of 531 message/ month in 2006). However, the email list is a core communication path to those not on Facebook. It also preserves history better than Facebook; that group includes a lot of club history.
After discussions with Paul Ferguson and Bob Brueckner, I migrated the CCC email list to groups.io.
I’ve used Groups.io for some time, including several groups that migrated from Yahoo Groups to Groups.io because of Yahoo Groups’ history of lost or delayed messages.
Groups.io includes a number of features. You can be a member of a groups.io list (sending and receiving mail) without having an account. For web access, you can configure groups.io with an account, or log in with your Facebook or Google account. Groups.io also offers a migration path so we can move the entire contents of the CCCList Yahoo Groups (that entire history) into Groups.io.
