Exciting Announcement

I mentioned in a previous story that we had some exciting news coming up.  Well I believe we are far enough in the process to announce it.

The Awesome Mr. Paul Ferguson graciously donated all of his remaining guidebooks to the Club.  All together there are 816 copies of “Paddling Eastern North Carolina 3rd Edition” and 450 copies of “Canoe Kayak South Carolina”.  If you are not familiar with these guidebooks and you live in North Carolina then you might need to crawl out of the hole you have been hiding in as these are arguably the best guidebooks you can find for our region.  They are not whitewater specific but they do cover many of the local whitewater rivers near the triangle.  Paul spent many years paddling the waterways in our state and putting together these guidebooks that give you all information you could possibly want for a great trip.  To put it in whitewater terms, if Paul updated the river sections on AW, nobody would ever have to get on Facebook and ask about a river as it would tell you everything except what day to go!

We have decided to donate a number of the guidebooks to the Carolina Kayak Club to sell to their members as their members are more likely to use his guidebooks.  This is on top of the constraint of limited storage for climate controlled products and we have to be careful of how many we sell to non members in regards to our status as a non profit.  We have also developed a plan to sell a portion of the guidebooks to the retail shops in the region.

We will also be designating specific days and locations to sell the guidebooks to any club members interested.  A couple specific days during WOR and our December in person meeting will be designated as sale days as of right now but we also will attempt to add the book sale to a couple other events through the year.  We will not be selling them on the website to keep any member from having to store and mail out books on a regular basis.  The cost to members will be $10 per book.

As stated in the previous post, the proceeds from the guidebook sales will be earmarked for Conservation and Education.   The exact details for the money is still in the planning process however to give you an idea, if we sell our current limit to retailers, we will profit over $7,000 for the club.  That does not count any guidebooks sold to members.

What we are looking for is volunteers.  We need volunteers to help pick up the books from Paul and volunteers to help deliver the ordered books to retailers once we have received their orders.  We are already in the process of contacting the major outfitters/retailers within our region but we welcome any suggestions on retail shops in the region as we may miss one, especially if you know them to sell outdoor books or equipment.

Please let me know if you would like to volunteer or if you have questions.

Thank you

William Holman
