Neuse River Tree and Debris Removal

After quite an extended journey, we have gotten word that the City of Raleigh intends to remove the trees and debris on the New Bern Avenue Bridge in the Neuse River this coming Sunday, September 19th.  This is exciting news as it will allow them to officially reopen the city canoe launches located on the Neuse River.

Part of the reason for the delay has been the need to establish future protocols to prevent the problem reaching this extent and to understand who was responsible for the tree and debris removal.  They have also been working with the railroad to remove the trees on the railroad bridge at Highway 64 and believe a suitable passage has been created by the railroad in that location.

On Sunday, September 19th there will be a significant closure of the New Bern Avenue Bridge to facilitate the removal of trees and debris in the river to allow for future safe passage on the river.  The City of Raleigh is asking paddlers to stay off the river in this vicinity and to avoid the area in order to facilitate the effort on Sunday, September 19th.

The Carolina Canoe Club is working closely with the City of Raleigh on plans for future improvements of signage, communication, and access on the Neuse River.
