New CCC Meetup Page!
In order to better address the needs of the various communities associated with the Carolina Canoe Club, the CCC Board unanimously decided to explore a CCC Meetup page. This resource is not intended to replace the email list, the club website, or the Facebook page. Instead, it provides an additional resource to the paddling community at large. http://www.meetup.com/Carolina-Canoe-Club
For those unfamiliar with Meetup, Meetup is, at its core, a scheduling tool, which you can use to schedule and organize meetups. Thinking longer-term, moving the entire CCC calendar to the Meetup group is one possibility, but not planned at this time. At a larger level, Meetup is, in and of itself, a community, much like "users of Facebook". The CCC has not been readily available to that community. The CCC has a presence on Facebook. I'm sure you know people not on Facebook. A similar effect is here; now the CCC has a presence on Meetup. We'll actively consider other places as well, to try to meet the needs of the community that is paddlers.
Consider this a sign of the times in a multi-social universe. Different tools appeal to different people. If I had my druthers we'd just use email. List traffic having declined by 90% in the past few years shows that's unrealistic! There are people on the email list, and not on Facebook. There are people on Meetup that are not on either. As the strongest advocate for a single unifying presence, I accept the reality that it's unrealistic, and am trying to embrace the diversity. The Cruise chair will work to keep the various calendars in sync, but realistically there's already separation in the various communities, so Meetup is in some ways parodoxically a unifying measure.
