Officers-President

I’m a canoeist in the Triangle area with pretty equal enjoyment of whitewater and flatwater (lake sunsets/sunrises and coastal marsh waters exploration). After growing up around recreational paddle and water sports I didn’t get into “paddling” until 2007 in college at NC State’s Outdoor Adventure program, where I took an interest in leading sea kayaking trips. After a detour into wilderness medicine, triathlons, bike touring and rock climbing, I recently returned to paddling in 2014 with canoeing. These days my typical outings are catching a local sunrise or (more often) hopping on the Haw River when it’s running. I consume an amusing amount of literature and media about canoe history, canoe wilderness expeditions, and even canoe freestyling (learning from people like Bill Mason, Don Starkell, Ray Mears, Ray Goodwin and Marc Ornstein). A highlight of my year is a 3-day thru paddle of the Haw from Guilford County to Jordan lake with some friends. My dream paddles are to take my family (married with 2 boys 3 and 5 y/o) on trips like the Allagash River 10-day/100-mile route in Maine, or Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend.

I majored in philosophy at NC State with minors in English and History and later attended law school in Chapel Hill. I have practiced law in Orange County since 2015. I dabble in some part-time work in the fitness industry as well as occasional guiding on local piedmont and eastern NC rivers/waterways.

I have a great deal of appreciation for the role the CCC has played in my access to this wonderful sport, and it is an honor to serve the 2025 calendar year as its president.
