WOR 2018 Alert – Flooding at Smoky Mountain Meadows
As you may be aware, heavy rain in the Bryson City area resulted in significant flooding at our WOR host campground, Smoky Mountain Meadows. The campground has worked with us to stay open to accommodate our group with some restrictions.
Some of the sites near the bathhouse and along Alarka Road are under water, and much of the big field is also under water. So the plan at the moment for camping at SMM is as follows:
- People with reservations for sites that are now closed for flooding will be moved to higher ground, likely where the big tent has been set up in previous years
- If you have a reserved space that is not indicated as closed on the map, you may camp there
- Field camping is allowed but no vehicles will be permitted in the field. You would need to park along the perimeter of the field and walk to your tent site.
- Morning meetings will take place under the pavilion at SMM since we will not have the big tent
Some WOR attendees without reserved sites may have to find an alternate home for the week. We’ve been calling around to various area campgrounds. Some possibilities include:
- Turkey Creek Campground – (828)-488-8966
- Nelson’s Nantahala Hideaway – (800)-936-6649
- Hide Away Campground – (828)-488-2083
- Timberlake Family Campground – (828)-497-7320 NOTE: The campground owners stressed that Timberlake is a quiet campground. Partiers and night owls should look for other options!
- Flaming Arrow Campground – (877)-497-6161
We realize this is a major inconvenience to deal with just a day or so before your vacation. Thanks for your patience and understanding while we try to make the best out of this situation. Once we get everyone situated, we are going to have a great time on the rivers! Keep checking this site, the club FB page, or CCClist for further updates.
