WOR 2018 Guide

Week of Rivers 2018

Welcome to WOR 2018!  The following is a guide to some of the events that have been set up this year, including clinics, night life, and a great opportunity to give back to the local community.

And remember: You MUST be a PAID member of the Carolina Canoe Club to participate in WOR. (Join the Carolina Canoe Club!)

Flooding at Smoky Mountain Meadows

Heavy rains caused massive flooding at Smoky Mountain Meadows early Thursday 6/28.  The campsite will remain open for us but there are some notable changes about where we can camp.  Please check out this announcement if you aren’t already aware of these changes.

Morning Meeting Time Change 6/30, 7/1

Because many WOR participants may have had to find alternate campgrounds after the flood, we are going to push the morning meetings back until 9:00am on the first two days of WOR.  This will give those folks an opportunity to get adjusted to their new environs and routine.  When we get a better idea of how widely our group was scattered, we will make a decision on whether to keep the meeting time at 9:00am for the remainder of the week or revert to our traditional 8:30am time.

Schedule

As events are added to the website, you can find the 2018 schedule here

Target Rivers

Be prepared for the morning meeting!  If you’re unfamiliar with the rivers that we might get to paddle this week, take a look at the WOR Target River List for information about the many options we have in the area.  And check out syotr.org for river levels.

Clinics

Check out the list of CLINICS being offered this week by CCC instructors and our friends at USNWC and NOC! Click on the link to each clinic for registration information.

Evening Activities

The day isn’t over when the paddling is done!  There’s an assortment of entertaining evening activities taking place at Smoky Mountain Meadows and around Bryson City.

Community Service Opportunities

We want to show some love and support for our home away from home here in Swain County, NC.  So in addition to our annual river cleanup on the Tuckasegee (Monday, July 2), the CCC has taken on two additional community service projects this year.  The club has organized a food drive through Bryson City United Methodist Church’s Restoration House, in which we’ll be collecting donations of non-perishable food items at WOR and delivering them on the morning of Friday, July 6.  We’ve also collected care packages for the In Home Aid program for seniors through the Swain County Health Department.

Update: see the note from Wayne Dickert about the Restoration House efforts!  Please read and bring some food to donate!

Pirates of the Tuckasegee

One of the great WOR traditions is the annual Pirates of the Tuck trip.  A flotilla of swashbuckling young buccaneers will take over the Tuckasegee Gorge with an arsenal of water pistols and super soakers.  Prepare to be boarded, and prepare to get wet!

The Pirates will sail on July 4th!

Bad Idea Theater

This is such a bad idea, we probably shouldn’t even mention it on this site.  Don’t do it.

Throw Rope Contest!
