Planning for Week Of Rivers continues in earnest now. CDC guidelines improved our situation yesterday and we are on our way to having a mostly “normal” Week of Rivers.  We are working on the details for clinics and workshops throughout the week.  As stated earlier, this year’s theme is River Safety and our slogan is: “Be an active participant in your own rescue.”

If you have not officially joined CCC or renewed your membership, please do so now! It’s a very reasonable fee and helps put on this event and fund CCC’s other efforts throughout the year. There may be discounts offered to club members and paying ahead of time ensures your name is on the membership roster.

Make your reservations NOW for your stay. Although Smoky Mountain Meadows Campground is the epicenter for Week of Rivers,  the area offers lots of other options to suit your taste. https://www.greatsmokies.com/lodging/

Smoky Mountain Meadows Campground – (828) 488-3672

Turkey Creek Campground – (828) 488-8966

Gorgeous Stays (Glamping) – (828) 421-2282

We have our morning meetings at 0830, so don’t go too far away. Trips are organized at the morning meetings and you really need to be there to get on a trip.

The CCC Officers and Staff met over the weekend and have decided that Week of Rivers 2021 is a go! The official dates are July 2-11, 2021. Come early and stay late if you can.

Here’s the official word: With steadily decreasing Covid-19 cases and increasing vaccination numbers, CCC feels that we can conduct a safe Week of Rivers in 2021. We will continue to observe and follow the guidelines of the CDC, ACA and the NC Governor’s Office. Our interest is keeping our participants safe as well as our host community. The current plan is to limit large gatherings. Those that do occur will observe social distancing and mask guidelines. We can do this, but your cooperation will be necessary. Since many WOR participants come from other states where rules may be different, behavior will need to adjusted once you enter North Carolina. (That goes for alcohol and drug rules, too). Paddling trips throughout the week may take participants to Georgia and Tennessee. Familiarize yourself those states as well.

The schedule is starting to take shape for some of our signature events. This year’s theme is all about safety and we are working hard to tailor our events around that. We are also working on a schedule of clinics. Now is the time to suggest ideas and make requests. Are you willing to help to organize an event?

For now, start getting familiar with the menu of rivers and formulate your goals for the week.

Stay tuned here and on the Carolina Canoe Club Week of Rivers 2021 event tab on Facebook. There is already a ton of information on the event tab, just scroll through it.

Week of Rivers 2021 is scheduled for July 2-11, 2021. It will again be based out of Smoky Mountain Meadows Campground located just outside of Bryson City, NC.

Carolina Canoe Club is lead and staffed by volunteers and has been for 51 years. Week of Rivers is also organized by a group of dedicated volunteers.  If there is an event or activity that you would like to see at Week of Rivers, please suggest it and offer to organize it. Over the years many fun activities, created on a whim, have become annual events and a major part of Week of Rivers. Most Week of Rivers veterans come with a plan of what they want to paddle. If you are a first-timer there will be plenty of mentors to help you find your way. All we ask is that you do your homework and familiarize yourself with the “menu” of rivers that are typically offered during Week of Rivers so your first morning meeting isn’t a complete shock to your system.

Plans for WOR 2021 are already in the works.  River safety will be the theme during 2021 with games, workshops and clinics geared towards improving everyone’s river safety skills and knowledge. There will be a variety of paddling clinics offered and almost daily rolling sessions at Fontana Lake. The Pirates of the Tuckasegee will sail on July 4th, Bad Idea Theater and the GNAR will play at Nantahala Falls on July 7th. Ice Cream, music, themed paddling trips and other activities are also penciled in the schedule.

Go ahead and join or renew your membership to CCC today. The Membership Chair will appreciate it.
