Umpteenth Annual June Nolichucky Trip
Two Trip Weekend
Saturday October 19, 2013 – French Broad Section 9
Martha was a bit nervous about her first time as a “trip coordinator”. However she had been on French Broad – Section 9 many times before and the crew was equally experienced. The level was a moderate 1450 cfs and the weather was also sunny and moderate. As it turned out her biggest task was organizing the shuttle. We had a crew of about a dozen, with a mix of kayaks and open canoes. It was a pretty mellow day.
Sunday October 20, 2013 – Nolichucky
Mother Nature spoiled us this weekend, delivering perfect water levels, weather, and even a pretty spectacular nightlight for a pre-WOR trip to the Nolichucky.
From a trip coordinator standpoint Saturday's trip on the Noli (Nolichucky) was about as easy as it gets. The vote to choose a river was unanimous for the Noli. Our carpools met in two locations and arrived at the Noli Gorge Campground almost simultaneously. Shuttle drivers were pre-arranged and ready to go before we were changed and geared up.
this trip was run jointly with the Foothills Paddling Club in Greenville SC…The level was 700 cfs, which may have depressed the turnout for the trip. The weather was hot and sunny, the water clear and a perfect temperature for swimming and cooling off.
Nine paddlers made the run, including 3 1/2 first timers. Participants included David Blumberg, Merridee Harper, Steve Getz, David Williams, Joe Owensby, Steve Yost, John MacDonald, Rick Steeves, and Cat Thrash.
