It was a great day cleaning up at Robseon Canoe Launch with The Haw River Assembly. We had 3 kayaks and 3 canoes launched with a total of 12 boaters on the water, along with another 7 folks (and a goldendoodle: Pearl) on shore walking trails to cleanup. My brother, Scott Jones, along with his wife, 3 young girls and another family of 4 came down from Greensboro to join and represent the North Carolina Rowing Center. It’s not everyday you put inexperienced paddlers in open canoes and have them come back smiling, much less when they’re on trash collection duty while playing aquatic school buss with 2-3 young children. It was impressive and encouraging to see the good spirits coming from the Triad. Despite the 3 open canoe being very full of children and trash – there were no swims! A newcomer, “Lee”, was at Robeson by mistake (intending to meet his group at another location), but when I shared some of our Rise coffee and biscuits, he mysteriously decided he’d stay and paddle withe the CCC that day – and he made an impressive haul in his kayak. A family of 3 from the Pittsboro Rotary club also briefly joined us by mistake, also meaning to be at a different Jordan lake location – but again, the paddling action, kids and doughnuts seemed to be attracting passersby. Alton of course materialized without warning in his woodland magic fashion and started in as resident cameraman but ended the day climbing around under woodpiles on some of the middle islands helping extract mysterious items while an unnamed CCC president may have narrowly avoided the need to get out the first aid kit when throwing all manner of trash without adequate warning down to Alton from atop said woodpile. Lastly, Greg Moon was out and about in his kayak doing the good work as well, coming back with a bag so large he almost had a need to show us his rolling skills.
This is a wonderful event that I hope the CCC will continue to join the HRA in and get more people out to.
