The Nantahala River, as usual, provided an excellent means to escape the summer heat last weekend.  Kathy Cusick and Martin Doyle joined my last minute quest to knock off some rust after a long layoff from paddling, and the Nanty was a perfect and refreshing choice.  Despite the temperatures in the mid-upper 80’s, we didn’t encounter a whole lot of river traffic and more or less had the river to ourselves and had a great day.  After paddling, we headed over to Endless River Adventures, where we met several CCC members at Wayne Dickert’s farewell celebration.

Kathy and I paddled on Sunday and Monday as well, before heading home.  On my way back to the Triangle, I took a detour up to Carver’s Gap to do a short hike on the Appalachian Trail near Roan Mountain.  I suppose I missed the peak of the spectacular rhododendron blooms this year but the flame azaleas were brilliant and lit up the hazy views of the mountains in the distance.

Can’t wait for my return trip for WOR.  The countdown begins…
