This was the 13th iteration of a trip that began in January 2000.  That year the forecast early in the week was fantastic, but it deteriorated to the point that we were ready to cancel the trip the day before it was scheduled.  When 14 people said they wanted to go,  off we went.  By the end of the day, we had icicles hanging from our helmets, and had to brave slick, icy roads to get home. The Hypothermia Challenge was born!

Mighty Mayo River Trip Report                             January 15th 2012

Twelve at the put in. Twelve at the take out. Russ Condrey taught me to always bring all my gear and to always bring everyone home. We did, but it was close to not being so.

Boaters:

Joe Fortin, Sammy Allred, Lucas Conkle, Danny Byrd, Robert Pajor, Pete Walther, Nate Krizmanich and David Zane Stacy were in kayaks.

On a beautiful sunny November afternoon, my mom asked, “Greta, do you want to run the Middle Haw this weekend?”  I gulped, “Yeah, sure.”   The Middle Haw?  No sweat, right? I’ve done the Tuck, the Nanty and the Lower Pigeon.  No problem.  But you know what?  A part of me screamed, “Pause!”   You see, I had chickened out on a run on the Middle Haw earlier in the paddling season.
